Virginia Leigh Porcher papers, 1889-1961.

Papers consist of correspondence, writings, and other items. Letters to Virginia Leigh Porcher and her sister Anne Allston Porcher from family members, relatives, and others concern family matters, travels in Europe, India, and elsewhere, real estate transactions and disputes, Virginia Leigh Porcher's appointment as vice regent of the South Carolina Mt. Vernon Ladies' Association, and other matters. Included are letters (1918-1919) to Louise de Cherigny Porcher from A. Moultrie Brailsford, Jr., a medical officer of the American Expeditionary Forces in France, discussing his experiences during the war, French women, visits to chateaux, and other subjects. A copy of a letter (3 November 1943) from "Lib," an American Red Cross nurse in North Africa, describes living conditions at the camp of a tent hospital. Other correspondents include Yates Snowden and Julia Porcher Wickham. Writings (1896-1930's) of Virginia Leigh Porcher include essays and articles about the lore of Charleston (S.C.) houses, the Confederate Home (Charleston, S.C.), and other topics. Writings about Asheville (N.C.), Fredericksburg (Va.), and Kentucky (by Louise de Cherigny Porcher) include related photographs. There are also writings by Virginia L. Porcher entitled "Negro Character Sketches," reminiscences about her childhood and family, poems, short stories, and notes concerning the French Huguenot Church (Charleston, S.C.) and other topics. Other items include property records, including a land sale contract (1925) for property in Hollywood, Fla., tax sale notices, and a receipt for a survey of property at 141 Church Street (Charleston, S.C.); a handbill (ca. 1889) for Miss Emma S. Gibbes's Primary Preparatory School for Girls; a list of the members of the Confederate Home Association; lyrics of Negro spirituals; and fragments of a diary (1920's). There is also a travel diary (1898) of Virginia Leigh Porcher's trip to Europe which includes photographs and other mementos.
